Rewriting Your Life Story - The Practice of Differentiation of Self in the Multigenerational Family System
Pre-Conference Coaching Group 

This is coaching of self-selected participants in their work to define a self in their extended families.  This will be done in a small group setting. Attention will be given to differences between individual psychological thinking and Bowen family systems thinking, and the application of ideas and concepts in Bowen theory in this process.


Course objectives
  • to enhance integration of Bowen family systems theory in daily life
  • to promote awareness of one's own functioning patterns with family of origin and develp  strategies for effrective functioning in famly of origin and extended familes.
  • to promote the practice of  differentiation of self 
Course format

Two to  three participants (self-selected) will present their families, with questions and comments by the Instructor.



Mr. James B. Smith, M.S.


Mr. James B. Smith’s interests include the use of genealogy in doing family research and the place of Bowen theory in the history of science and western thought.  He is one of the six founders of Western Pennsylvania Family Center (WPFC) in Pittsburgh, P.A., where he has taught basic and advanced courses in Bowen theory since 1985, and has been its Executive Director since 2008.  He pursued doctoral studies in psychology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, P.A., and trained in Bowen theory at the Family Therapy Institute at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, P.A. under Paulina McCullough.  A frequent presenter at local, national and international meetings on the theory and practice of Bowen theory, and the writer of numerous articles and chapters on Bowen theory and its applications, Mr. Smith has a clinical / consulting practice in Pittsburgh, P.A.
